I don't think that this issue is confined to the Picasso's our C4 will do the same sort of thing if you let it. Under the circumstances that you seem to be describing I always take full control of the car and disable the ECO mode, after all Citroen have thoughtfully provided a switch on the dashboard for such an eventuality.

Ive tried to reset it by holding down the trip counter & then pressing the Start/Stop button, this resets the spanner icon and miles until next service etc. But the orange service light is still on!?
